•

This project began in Poitiers, following a discussion with people from Le Lieu Multiple. I then took a first walk in the city and wrote a software sketch trying to find a way to render in sounds what I was feeling in the streets.

In March 2018, while in residency in Berlin at the ZKU, I took two walks in Moabit. These walks started from the same point but slowly drifted apart. They then came back almost to the starting point. The first walk started on the right side of the street, the second one on the left side, which explains the drifting, since following the buildings on one side or the other lead to different paths. Video of the facades were recorded on both sides, as well as gps coordinates and altitude. In April of the same year, I went to work at EMS studios, in Stockholm. I first used the coordinates and altitude variations as voltage sources for the Buchla synthesizer they have in studio 4. I recorded a number of versions with different oscillators settings. I then used these recordings, each exactly 30 minutes long as the original walks, and composed the berlin x and berlin y pieces by mixing from one track to another, overlaying some, but without any cuts.

After recording these two works, I began looking for a way to render these walks in sounds with less personal input than in the first version. Sitting in the lounge at EMS, I could hear the ticking of the seven clocks they have on the wall : seven clocks that show exactly the same time, but that do not produce exactly the same sound. So I used it as a structure. I created a piece were each second is divided in seven ticks. One is a reference click, then there is one for each value from the gps : x, y and altitude for 2 walks. The x, y and altitude variations were then applied to each corresponding click as a drifting factor for each sound. To render the progression in the journey, I simply added one millisecond to each cycle of the clock. The first clock tick is 1 second, the second tick is 1.001, etc. Once the process has been completed, the last clock cycle is now 2 seconds long and the walks that lasted 30 minutes are now a one hour sound track, titled berliner zeit.

Télécharger ou acheter le cd

Download or buy cd[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”1655″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” onclick=”custom_link” link=”https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/jocelynrobert10″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]télécharger ou acheter le cd / download or buy cd [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Ce projet a débuté à Poitiers, après une discussion avec les gens du Lieu Multiple.
