Constellation Gu\u00e9rande, from Christophe Havard and Jocelyn Robert, was first a sound walk and a composition for pipe organ. Commissioned by Athenor (Saint-Nazaire) and Avatar (Quebec City), the performance, created specifically for the Coll\u00e9giale Saint-Aubin in Gu\u00e9rande, was presented six times publically on Saturday, April 30, 2022. In July 2023, Christophe Havard and Jocelyn Robert came together again, this time in Avatar\u2019s studios in Quebec City. Louis Ouellet, compagnon d’art depuis les ann\u00e9es 80, est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 le 30 juin 2023. Cet album, que nous venions tout juste de terminer, lui est d\u00e9di\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Il y eut d\u2019abord Zeit Und Wetter. C\u2019\u00e9tait une pi\u00e8ce pour piano m\u00e9canique contr\u00f4l\u00e9 par informatique. Le logiciel que nous avions con\u00e7u jouait les 720 permutations du nombre 6 en les conjuguant aux donn\u00e9es m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques d\u2019une ann\u00e9e enti\u00e8re et aux les r\u00e8gles de base de la musique pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer une pi\u00e8ce qui durait un an en continu et qui ne pouvait s\u2019\u00e9couter qu\u2019en temps r\u00e9el. En effet, le code de Zeit Und Wetter lisait directement l’horloge de l’ordinateur, y prenant constamment la date et l’heure, puisant ensuite dans un fichier les informations de temp\u00e9rature correspondantes (vent, pr\u00e9cipitation, ensoleillement, pression, etc) et les assignant aux param\u00e8tres d’une autre machine logicielle, qui comportait les principes premiers des d\u00e9cisions musicales.<\/p>\n

Son exp\u00e9rience d\u2019\u00e9coute refl\u00e9tait ce geste banal, quotidien, que nous r\u00e9p\u00e9tons tous \u00e0 intervalle r\u00e9gulier sans vraiment y penser: prendre quelques minutes pour regarder par la fen\u00eatre la temp\u00e9rature qu\u2019il fait dehors et le temps qui coule; toujours la m\u00eame chose et jamais pareil!<\/span><\/p>\n

Zeit Und Wetter a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e \u00e0 quelques reprises pour des p\u00e9riodes de quelques semaines dans des espaces d\u2019art, mais comme le format \u00ab 365 jours \u00bb ne convient pas \u00e0 tous, nous en avons fait une premi\u00e8re version abr\u00e9g\u00e9e de 12 disques compacts qui pr\u00e9sentaient chacun une heure extraite de chaque mois. L\u2019heure choisie du mois de mai est incluse dans le format cd (mais pas sur Bandcamp, \u00e0 cause des restrictions de taille de fichier). Puis, dans l\u2019id\u00e9e de faire un r\u00e9sum\u00e9 du r\u00e9sum\u00e9, un instant fugitif, nous avons condens\u00e9 chaque mois en un tout petit segment \u20143 minutes \u00e0 peine, comme une photo de calendrier\u2014 pour que l\u2019ann\u00e9e tienne sur un seul disque compact, sous le titre Les M\u00e9t\u00e9ores. It began with Zeit Und Wetter, a work for computer-controlled player piano. We developed a software that generated the 720 permutations of digits 1 to 6, which were played according to the meteorological data of an entire year and basic music theory, producing a work that lasted one continuous year and could only be listened to in real time. The code for Zeit Und Wetter read the computer clock directly and constantly to assess the date and time, then took the corresponding weather information (wind, precipitation, sunlight, barometric pressure, etc.) from a file and assigned them to the parameters of another software engine, which contained key principles of musical decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The listening experience reflected a daily, banal gesture that we all make on a regular basis without really thinking about it: looking out the window for a few minutes to check the weather and see time passing; always the same thing and never quite the same!<\/p>\n

Zeit Und Wetter was presented a few times in art spaces for periods of a few weeks, but as the \u201c365-day format\u201d isn\u2019t for everyone, we made an initial abridged version of twelve CDs that each presented one hour extracted from each month. The hour selected from May is included in the cd (but not on Bandcamp, given the file size exceeding the maximum allowed). Then, with the idea of making a summary of a summary, a fleeting moment, we condensed each month into a very short segment\u2014barely 3 minutes, like a calendar snapshot\u2014so that the year can fit on one CD called Les M\u00e9t\u00e9ores. \u00c0 l\u2019hiver 2021 je suis tomb\u00e9 malade : cancer de la gorge. Le cancer lui-m\u00eame n\u2019a pas eu vraiment le temps de faire du dommage, mais les traitements de radioth\u00e9rapie et de chimioth\u00e9rapie ont frapp\u00e9 fort. J\u2019en ai eu pour deux mois et j\u2019ai essay\u00e9 de continuer \u00e0 faire des sons pendant toute la p\u00e9riode, mais j\u2019ai \u00e9chou\u00e9. J\u2019en suis venu \u00e0 un point o\u00f9 je ne pouvais pas trouver la concentration n\u00e9cessaire pour lire une simple bande dessin\u00e9e, alors suivre le fil de la composition \u00e9tait vraiment hors de ma port\u00e9e. Mais j\u2019ai essay\u00e9 de tenir bon, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que la seule chose que je sois capable de faire fut de regarder par la fen\u00eatre toute la journ\u00e9e. Alors j\u2019ai laiss\u00e9 tomber. Dix-huit mois plus tard, je suis sur mes deux pieds, ma sant\u00e9 est revenue. Je suis retourn\u00e9 \u00e9couter ce que j\u2019avais laiss\u00e9 en plan sur le disque dur et j\u2019ai eu la surprise d\u2019y trouver ces deux pi\u00e8ces inachev\u00e9es, t\u00e9moins de cette p\u00e9riode \u00e9trange, Je les ai ressorties, les ai termin\u00e9es, et les voici, sous le titre ROBJ590531, le code inscrit sur le bracelet qu\u2019on me faisait \u00e0 chaque fois que j\u2019entrais \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_column_text]ROBJ590531<\/em><\/a>

In the Winter of 2021, I got badly sick : throat cancer. The cancer itself didn\u2019t have enough time to do too much damage, but the radiotherapy and chemotherapy did hurt a lot. The treatments lasted for two months and I tried to maintain some sort of audio composing going throughout the whole process, but I failed. I got to a point where I was so confused I couldn\u2019t even read a comics book, so keeping track of what I was doing in sounds was completely out of my reach. But I kept it going as long as I could, until the only thing I could do was sit by the window. Then I left it to itself. Eighteen months later, I am in better shape, my health is back ok. I went back and listened to the works I had on the hard drive, the sketches I made while floating in the therapy clouds, and was surprised to find two unachieved works that somehow were a pretty good account of the experience itself. I dug them out, finished them and here they are under the title ROBJ590531, which was the ID on the wristband they would give me every time I would go to the hospital.

The whole project was recorded on the Casavant organ of the Palais Montcalm, in Quebec City.
