Quand je te parle, les mots se mettent en ligne et je peux suivre le train, mais dès que les sons s’arrêtent dans ma bouche mon regard est accroché par l’écureuil qui traverse la rue sur le fil électrique en haut du coin de la clôture qui fait un moiré derrière la petite fille en trottinette qui arrête d’urgence, les yeux grands ouverts, peur ou plaisir, pour éviter le chat qui regarde vers le ciel et qui perd l’animal gris devant la corniche grise de la clinique dentaire comme celle de Billy Pèlerin avant qu’on le transfert dans un hôpital aux murs verts pâles parce qu’il voyageait dans l’espace pour retrouver Patachon au milieu des étoiles comme celles dans mes oreilles quand le docteur a dit, dans un bureau aux murs aussi verts aussi pâles, en pointant vers un graphique : « c’est ça », mais ce n’était qu’un tigre de papier.

When I talk to you, words align and I can follow the meaning like water in the sand but as soon as I become quiet my mind is caught by the move of a dark squirrel on a dark wire up over the street reaching a post near the dogs that bark buzzing bees in front of the dental clinic like the one Billy Pilgrim used to operate until they took him to an hospital because he was seeing to many extraterrestrial beings in his dreams with a movie star and memories of gun shots in a wet field in Germany leading to a dark trip in a train, in which cars align like words in the mouth of the doctor when she said, in a pale green wall office on a winter afternoon « This is it » but is was a paper tiger.

Constellation Guérande, de Christophe Havard et Jocelyn Robert, a d’abord été une marche sonore doublée d’une composition pour orgue à tuyaux. Résultat d’une commande d’œuvre d’Athenor (Saint-Nazaire) et Avatar (Québec), la performance, réalisée spécifiquement pour la Collégiale St-Aubin de Guérande, a été présentée au public à six reprises le samedi 30 avril 2022. En juillet 2023, Christophe Havard et Jocelyn Robert se sont réunis à nouveau, à Québec cette fois dans les studios d’Avatar. À partir des enregistrements de la performance,
ils ont réalisé la pièce du même titre que vous trouverez ici.
Constellation Guérande, from Christophe Havard and Jocelyn Robert, was first a sound walk and a composition for pipe organ. Commissioned by Athenor (Saint-Nazaire) and Avatar (Quebec City), the performance, created specifically for the Collégiale Saint-Aubin in Guérande, was presented six times publically on Saturday, April 30, 2022. In July 2023, Christophe Havard and Jocelyn Robert came together again, this time in Avatar’s studios in Quebec City. Using recordings of the performance, they created the work under the same title that can be found here.

Les Météores et Zeit Und Wetter (Mai)

Louis Ouellet, compagnon d’art depuis les années 80, est décédé le 30 juin 2023. Cet album, que nous venions tout juste de terminer, lui est dédié.

Il y eut d’abord Zeit Und Wetter. C’était une pièce pour piano mécanique contrôlé par informatique. Le logiciel que nous avions conçu jouait les 720 permutations du nombre 6 en les conjuguant aux données météorologiques d’une année entière et aux les règles de base de la musique pour générer une pièce qui durait un an en continu et qui ne pouvait s’écouter qu’en temps réel. En effet, le code de Zeit Und Wetter lisait directement l’horloge de l’ordinateur, y prenant constamment la date et l’heure, puisant ensuite dans un fichier les informations de température correspondantes (vent, précipitation, ensoleillement, pression, etc) et les assignant aux paramètres d’une autre machine logicielle, qui comportait les principes premiers des décisions musicales.
Son expérience d’écoute reflétait ce geste banal, quotidien, que nous répétons tous à intervalle régulier sans vraiment y penser: prendre quelques minutes pour regarder par la fenêtre la température qu’il fait dehors et le temps qui coule; toujours la même chose et jamais pareil!
Zeit Und Wetter a été présentée à quelques reprises pour des périodes de quelques semaines dans des espaces d’art, mais comme le format « 365 jours » ne convient pas à tous, nous en avons fait une première version abrégée de 12 disques compacts qui présentaient chacun une heure extraite de chaque mois. L’heure choisie du mois de mai est incluse dans le format cd (mais pas sur Bandcamp, à cause des restrictions de taille de fichier). Puis, dans l’idée de faire un résumé du résumé, un instant fugitif, nous avons condensé chaque mois en un tout petit segment —3 minutes à peine, comme une photo de calendrier— pour que l’année tienne sur un seul disque compact, sous le titre Les Météores. It began with Zeit Und Wetter, a work for computer-controlled player piano. We developed a software that generated the 720 permutations of digits 1 to 6, which were played according to the meteorological data of an entire year and basic music theory, producing a work that lasted one continuous year and could only be listened to in real time. The code for Zeit Und Wetter read the computer clock directly and constantly to assess the date and time, then took the corresponding weather information (wind, precipitation, sunlight, barometric pressure, etc.) from a file and assigned them to the parameters of another software engine, which contained key principles of musical decisions.
The listening experience reflected a daily, banal gesture that we all make on a regular basis without really thinking about it: looking out the window for a few minutes to check the weather and see time passing; always the same thing and never quite the same!
Zeit Und Wetter was presented a few times in art spaces for periods of a few weeks, but as the “365-day format” isn’t for everyone, we made an initial abridged version of twelve CDs that each presented one hour extracted from each month. The hour selected from May is included in the cd (but not on Bandcamp, given the file size exceeding the maximum allowed). Then, with the idea of making a summary of a summary, a fleeting moment, we condensed each month into a very short segment—barely 3 minutes, like a calendar snapshot—so that the year can fit on one CD called Les Météores. On May 29th 2023, I have received, along with twelve other artists, as Compagnon de l’Ordre du Québec
À l’hiver 2021 je suis tombé malade : cancer de la gorge. Le cancer lui-même n’a pas eu vraiment le temps de faire du dommage, mais les traitements de radiothérapie et de chimiothérapie ont frappé fort. J’en ai eu pour deux mois et j’ai essayé de continuer à faire des sons pendant toute la période, mais j’ai échoué. J’en suis venu à un point où je ne pouvais pas trouver la concentration nécessaire pour lire une simple bande dessinée, alors suivre le fil de la composition était vraiment hors de ma portée. Mais j’ai essayé de tenir bon, jusqu’à ce que la seule chose que je sois capable de faire fut de regarder par la fenêtre toute la journée. Alors j’ai laissé tomber. Dix-huit mois plus tard, je suis sur mes deux pieds, ma santé est revenue. Je suis retourné écouter ce que j’avais laissé en plan sur le disque dur et j’ai eu la surprise d’y trouver ces deux pièces inachevées, témoins de cette période étrange, Je les ai ressorties, les ai terminées, et les voici, sous le titre ROBJ590531, le code inscrit sur le bracelet qu’on me faisait à chaque fois que j’entrais à l’hôpital.
In the Winter of 2021, I got badly sick : throat cancer. The cancer itself didn’t have enough time to do too much damage, but the radiotherapy and chemotherapy did hurt a lot. The treatments lasted for two months and I tried to maintain some sort of audio composing going throughout the whole process, but I failed. I got to a point where I was so confused I couldn’t even read a comics book, so keeping track of what I was doing in sounds was completely out of my reach. But I kept it going as long as I could, until the only thing I could do was sit by the window. Then I left it to itself. Eighteen months later, I am in better shape, my health is back ok. I went back and listened to the works I had on the hard drive, the sketches I made while floating in the therapy clouds, and was surprised to find two unachieved works that somehow were a pretty good account of the experience itself. I dug them out, finished them and here they are under the title ROBJ590531, which was the ID on the wristband they would give me every time I would go to the hospital.

Nouveau travaux d’orgue à tuyaux. Québec et Guérande sont des villes de mer. C’est lors de résidences d’artiste dans ces deux villes que L’Océante est née. Il y a deux parties : « Les Marais salants » —les 5 premières pièces— a été initiée à Guérande et terminée à Québec, alors que « Après le déluge » —les 5 suivantes— a été initiée à Québec et fignolée à Guérande. L’ensemble a été enregistré à l’orgue Casavant du Palais Montcalm, à Québec.
New music for pipe organ. Quebec and Guerande are cities of the sea. L’Oceante was composed while in residency in these two places. There are two parts : « Les Marais salants » —the first 5 pieces— was initiated in Guerande and finished in Quebec, while « Après le deluge » —the last 5 pieces— began in Quebec and was finished in Guerande. The whole project was recorded on the Casavant organ of the Palais Montcalm, in Quebec City.

So tender and heartfelt. It reminds me that music has the power to utterly move me to a jabbering wreck.
